Using rice water for your hair has been taking rounds in recent days and we thought we would shed some light over here, by discussing whats & hows of rice water.
You must have noted rice including red rice is used in natural skin care products like masks and scrubs as an exfoliator like The Zero Skin’s Detan Scrub (Rose, Papaya & Licorice). Similarly rice water is said to bring benefits to your hair. There are references where asian women especially chinese women using rice water to grow that long beautiful hair.
Though there are not much studies to prove the benefits scientifically, rice water is proven to improve your hair health altogether. If you are boiling your rice instead of using a cooker, the remaining water after you boil when used to water plants shows improved growth in plants.
So what is rice water?
Rice water is nothing but the starchy water that you get when you soak rice in water or the remains after boiling the rice. This water is rich in Vitamin B, Vitamin E, Amino Acids, Minerals and antioxidants all of which is useful to your hair.
How to make a rice water?
Soak few spoons of rice in water. Leave it for couple of hours, at least an hour. Once your water becomes cloudy, strain the water and its ready to use. You can also allow the rice to soak for longer time from 12 up to 24 hrs. You can also use the water that is remained after boiling your rice. Fill the water in a bottle and use it when needed. You can also refrigerate for a longer shelf life.
How do I use rice water on my hair?
Rice water can be used with your regular hair wash routine. After your shampooing, apply the rice water, allow it for 2-5 minutes to settle on your hair and wash off. When you apply, make sure you start from your scalp & work through the strands of the hair. You can also use it as leave in conditioner.
Benefits that you get
Try eating wholegrain rice – not white rice. White rice doesn’t have all the nutrients that wholegrain rice has, and it won’t work on enriching your hair. Eating wholegrain rice will make your hair grow very fast, I’ve been eating wholegrain rice three times a week for years after my hair growth dramatically slowed down in my 40s. My hair is long and thick like it was in my 20s now. I tried pouring rice water on my hair before I got into eating the rice after someone told me it would make my hair grow. No, it didn’t do anything at all. You need those vitamins and minerals in your body, not on the outside of the hair. It will give you longer stronger nails too, and softer skin. Why pour rice water on your hair when you gain so much more from eating it?
